Detroit® takes another step forward in safety evolution with Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA6). Built on the reliable foundation of ABA5, Detroit Assurance® with ABA6 comes standard in the Fifth Generation Freightliner Cascadia® to deliver enhanced object detection and broader protection for all road users. Continue reading to take a deeper dive into what this new tech means for your fleet and how it can improve the way your business runs.

The advanced electrical architecture of the Fifth Generation Cascadia unlocks increased data processing capabilities, and enables enhanced camera and radar technology. These upgrades allow Detroit Assurance to offer near-complete coverage around the vehicle and to assist in more driving situations, from tracking vehicles as they pass, to monitoring across multiple lanes and in curves. It’s all made possible by the upgraded hardware and intelligent software that work together behind the scenes.
New improvements in ABA6:
Enhanced Multi-Purpose Camera (MPC3): In contrast to previous cameras, MPC3 delivers higher resolution, a 30% increase in reach with a wider field of vision, and improved depth perception to help spot potential hazards earlier and in more traffic situations.
Five Radars: Compared to previous generations, ABA6 not only features an increased number, but also brand-new radar hardware. The four short-range radars surrounding the sides and corners of the truck and the updated long-range front radar significantly boost object detection coverage and accuracy.
Updated Video Radar Decision Unit (VRDU) 3 Processing Software: Capable of greater processing power, and combining data from the camera and five radars, the VRDU tracks objects up to 270 degrees around the truck 14 times per second. Identifying the steering angles and speeds of other vehicles allows the system to recognize and respond to potential collision threats with greater precision and in more scenarios.
Navigating crowded highways is rarely simple. That’s why ABA6 is designed to assist with the complexity of everyday driving, whether it’s navigating highway traffic, poor visibility, or avoiding an unexpected hazard. And while mitigating and preventing accidents is the ultimate goal, it also brings a financial return on investment in safety technology. The reduction of crash severity and property damage, with up to 10% savings on insurance premiums, shows how quickly the safety system can pay for itself. Fleets that run with ABA6 are better equipped to maximize their profit and keep business moving while keeping the driver in control and the road ahead safer.

Active Brake Assist 6 responds in more moments that matter. With significantly enhanced hardware and software, ABA6 expands Detroit Assurance’s ability to detect and react in complex driving environments. Among the most important upgrades are its new emergency braking capabilities in multi-lane traffic, on curved roads, and when approaching offset vehicles.
Multi-lane emergency braking is one of the most significant updates in ABA6. With the improved radars and camera, the system monitors not just the vehicle’s own lane, but adjacent lanes as well. This is especially useful when the truck needs to change lanes suddenly, like when vehicles ahead stop unexpectedly. ABA6 also has braking support on curved roads or when approaching vehicles positioned at odd angles. Whether the truck is advancing toward a disabled vehicle stalled on a bending highway ramp or an accident with a spun-out vehicle, ABA6 is designed to respond. While keeping the driver in control, ABA6 provides collision detection and mitigation in phases. When a possible incident is detected, the system first issues audio and visual warnings, followed by partial braking to act as a physical warning. If the driver does not react, full braking will be subsequently activated.
The increased field of view and improved object classification from ABA6 allow the Cascadia to respond to more complex threats than before, with object recognition that isn’t limited to other vehicles. It can now detect moving and stationary pedestrians and bicyclists that share the road. This can be critical on surface streets to increase safety in tighter spaces like warehouses, city streets, and last-mile delivery zones. These advancements give drivers and fleets confidence in scenarios where traditional forward-facing systems struggled and reduce the risk of collisions that occur when visibility is limited.

ABA6 is the latest generation of the Active Brake Assist development that Detroit has continuously refined for years, making it a field-proven solution shaped by millions of miles of real-world experience.
The step from ABA5 to ABA6 is significant, with years of operational data, customer feedback, and engineering advancement. It’s improved not only in its hardware, with new short- and long-range radars and a high-resolution MPC3 camera, but also with how its components work together through updated VRDU3 software.
The result? ABA6 not only reacts more quickly, but also more intelligently to complex scenarios like offset vehicles, curved roads, and multi-lane traffic environments. This kind of performance comes from iterative testing and constant improvement that pushes for increased safety.
But even with these advancements, one thing remains unchanged: the driver is still in control. ABA6 is not designed to replace driver input or awareness. It’s built to support the driver in critical moments, stepping in when a collision seems imminent and milliseconds matter. Whether you are an owner-operator or fleet driver, ABA6 offers reassurance that drivers are backed by a system built on real performance and that Detroit continues to lead the industry by refining what works, not rushing to reinvent it.

Full protection comes from smart integration. Standard on all Fifth Generation Freightliner Cascadia trucks equipped with the Detroit Assurance Suite of Safety Systems, ABA6 works with other safety technologies like:
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – Maintains safe following distance.
Side Guard Assist 2 (SGA2) – Now monitors blind spots on the passenger and driver side of the truck, and warns about pedestrians, bicyclists and other objects, especially critical during lane changes or right turns.
Active Lane Assist 2 (optional) – Provides lane-keeping support on highways with road markings.
Front Guard Alert – Detects pedestrians and bicyclists immediately in front of the truck while stationary.
What does this mean for fleets? Real-time coordination enables smoother safety interventions, fewer false alerts, and a more confident driver.
