Safety on the road is never static. Traffic patterns shift, routes become more demanding, and drivers manage more variables more often. That’s why Detroit continues to evolve its safety systems as new needs are identified, delivering meaningful enhancements as soon as they are proven in testing.
Built into the Freightliner Cascadia®, Detroit Assurance® with Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA6) is a comprehensive safety suite designed to support drivers in everyday conditions. In 2027, it’ll be ready to hit the road with new features like Cross Traffic Assist and Active Side Guard Assist 2. These latest enhancements expand the technology’s value and capability, allowing it to support drivers in every mile, moment, and decision on their drive.
Before we get into its new features, let’s recap the proven Detroit Assurance platform that Cross Traffic Assist and Active Side Guard Assist 2 build upon.
Active Brake Assist 6 is not a single feature, but part of a fully integrated suite of safety systems.
All Freightliner Cascadias now come standard with four short-range radars positioned along the sides and corners of the truck, along with a long-range front radar and an advanced windshield-mounted camera.
Both the side chassis short-range radars and the headlight short-range radars provide coverage up to 525 feet (160 meters) from the truck. The long-range front radar detects up to 820 feet (250 meters) ahead, while the front radar’s short-range capability detects up to 328 feet (100 meters) ahead.
Together, these components survey 270 degrees around the truck and provide inputs 14 times per second. This helps the system detect and classify objects with greater accuracy, allowing drivers to handle more complex driving situations confidently.

If a potential collision is detected, the system responds in stages:
Visual and audible alerts notify the driver
If no action is taken, the system initiates partial braking
Full emergency braking is applied if the first two stages and the driver have not mitigated a collision
Additionally, the system is designed to recognize more moving and stationary vehicles. This includes vehicles in adjacent lanes, vehicles in visible curves, and vehicles positioned at offset angles, as is often seen when approaching an accident scene. It can also identify pedestrians and cyclists, adding another layer of awareness in complex driving environments.
All of this occurs in the background, supporting the driver without interrupting the drive. The goal is not to take control, but to assist when timing becomes critical.

Intersections introduce some of the most unpredictable moments on the road. Cross Traffic Assist is designed specifically for these scenarios, helping reduce the risk of cross-path collisions.
Cross Traffic Assist brings added confidence to busy intersections by identifying and tracking vehicles that cross the truck’s path from either side. When a potential collision risk is detected, the system can provide an audible and visual warning. Depending on the likelihood of impact, partial or full braking is also initiated when needed.

With Cross Traffic Assist, drivers encounter each intersection with more safety and confidence.
Additionally, Active Side Guard Assist 2 brings enhancements to Detroit Assurance that give drivers more support in every turn.

Turning movements, especially in traffic, require awareness in multiple directions at once. Active Side Guard Assist 2 expands protection during these moments, providing active braking on both left- and right-hand turns.
Here’s how it operates in each scenario specifically:
Right turns: The system monitors the passenger-side blind spot alongside the truck to help detect vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists that may not be visible to the driver. If a turn is attempted and a potential collision is identified, the system can issue warnings and apply braking to help avoid the hazard.
Left turns: When the turn signal is engaged, the system actively monitors oncoming traffic. If a turn is attempted and a potential collision is identified, it can issue warnings and apply braking when necessary, to help bring the truck to a stop.
It’s also important to understand how this feature is now delivered.
Active Side Guard Assist 2 comes standard, including both the original Side Guard Assist functionality as well as support through left-hand turns to assist drivers throughout a broader wider range of maneuvers. By bringing both directions into a single system, these capabilities work together to ensure consistent protection across both turning scenarios.
For drivers, that means fewer gaps in awareness. For fleets, it means a more complete approach to managing risk in tight, high-traffic environments.
Active Brake Assist 6, available on the Freightliner Cascadia, shows Detroit’s ongoing investment in safety.
